Problems & Treatments » Headaches & Migraines

Headaches are so common that almost everyone takes the odd one now and again for granted. However, people often forget to stop and questions ... Is getting a headache normal? Does everyone get headaches? You may be suffering with more than you need to. Chiropractors treat many of the causes of headaches.

Chiropractic can be effective in the treatment of headaches that are the result of an injury or problems to the neck (cervicogenic headache). These types of headache usually affect the base of the skull or one or both sides of the head and are usually dull and achy.

Migraine is a severe headache usually accompanied by other symptoms such as increased sensitivity to light or sound, nausea or visual disturbances. Problems affecting the vertebrae (bones of the spine) in the neck can cause headaches and be a contributory factory in migraines. Chiropractic can help to relieve tightness in your neck muscles due to stress and tension in your neck, shoulders and back.

Treating the cause not just the symptoms

The Doctors of Chiropractic at this Centre will ask you questions about your pain, medical history, posture and lifestyle, carry out a fully and thorough examination to discover the cause of your neck pain and offer a diagnosis of your complaint.

Then your treatment will begin often with gentle, specific adjustments (the chiropractic word for manipulation) done by hand to free stiff joints and remove spinal nerve irritation. This will restore normal movement to the area and decrease pain. This effective drug- free treatment is generally painless. Your Chiropractor may recommend ice or heat treatment, specific exercises and lifestyle and dietary changes.

What’s wrong with taking painkillers?

Painkillers can dull your pain, but it may well return as they do not necessarily deal with the cause. Painkillers can also have unwanted effects (‘side effects’). In fact taking pain killers to treat headaches (more than 15 days a month every month) can actually cause more headaches.

How can lifestyle changes help?

Stress can often be trigger of cervicogenic headaches and neck pain. Whilst Chiropractic treatment help we can aim to decrease the chances of the problem recurring by changing some habits and postures. There are also certain substances in food and drink and some mineral deficiencies that may be related to headaches. Small adjustment to your lifestyle in many cases can make major changes to the quality of your life. The Doctors of Chiropractic at the Centre may advise you about these.

What if it something serious?

Your Chiropractor has the training and experience to determine if Chiropractic treatment is not appropriate for the cause of your headaches. They will refer you to the appropriate healthcare professional such as GP or Consultant Neurologist.
